The C8 functional groups interact with the hydrophobic groups of the analyte, while the SCX has an interaction with the proton. Because of these strong interactions, stronger flushing conditions can be used to remove the common extracts that may interfere with UV detection or cause LC-MS ion suppression. There is no closure of the stationary phase, which can increase the interaction between the residual silyl alcohol base and the polar analyte, thus helping to enhance retention.
It is best used in purifying aqueous solutions, urine and
blood alkalinity (cationic) or neutral compounds such as
drugs and metabolites.
